I love the big, black mother of pearl “coins”. They fit nicely with the irregular silvery donuts, big grey pin-striped coins, an assortment of silvery and steely spacers and jet black beads. It’s a nice tension between even and odd.

This block of speckled grey quartz is rather modern compared to many other pieces. The quartz has an asymmetric posse of steely balls, stamped pewter coins and seed pearls on one side and clear glass beads with metallic squares and silvery fish on the opposite end.

A big glass, Black Beauty is the center of gravity for irregular pieces of pale grey, blue-black pearls and dark iridescent, mother-of-pearl chips. The slender silver-toned leaves and peek-a-boo rings prevent this piece from being predictable.

Working with grey gives a lot of poetic license to mix flat and blingy silver, steel and pewter tones, all in one bag. The pyramid shaped beads have a lovely iridescent quality, going from black to blue and purple. Grey is the new black.

Finding unique beads can mean a hunt through vintage shops. These big black beads are such a treasure and go very well with the big metal center bead and all the smaller, kitschy connector pieces.
